The setting
was ideal - an early 20th Century stone and brick country mansion,
Chateau Bradbury, set back on rolling lawns from a tree-lined street in
quit Monrovia on a sunny December afternoon. Some very special
V-12 and V-16 Cadillacs were the featured attractions at the event,
which drew over 90 CLC members. Following the owner's presentations about their
V-12's and V-16's, southern California Regional Director Tom Musson
presented Roy Schneider with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The
award is a large acrylic slab which holds the colorful crest and wings
logo and a rendering of a favorite car of Roy's, the 1947 Series 62
Sedanette.
Schneider's contributions to Southern
California Region and historical automotive writing are unique in the
region, if not the entire CLC: He served twice as regional director for
a total of over ten years. His first directorship began in the
late sixties. On the day that a human being first set foot on the
moon, Roy was guiding a tour for the Southern California Region.
He returned to directorship in the mid-nineties. He also produced
a fine regional newsletter throughout his second tenure as
director. In both tenures and as Director Emeritus he has been
event coordinator and promoter extraordinaire.
Those who are fortunate enough to own a copy of
Sixteen Cylinder Motorcars know that is was written by Roy
Schneider. So were Cadillacs of the Forties, Cadillacs of the
Fifties, and Cadillacs of the Sixties. In 1978, the national board
presented Schneider with the Maurice Hendry Award, the club's highest
award for writing. Roy's other writing credits include articles in
the Self-Starter and Self-Starter Annual about the Don Lee organization,
LaRue Thomas and Thomas Cadillac, GM's decisions about the 1941 model
year, the 1947 Cadillacs, styling of the 1940s, and the glory days along
Sunset Boulevard. He has even contributed Cadillac history to a
Japanese magazine.
The CLC Western Regions Vice President, Fred
Bausch, added his thoughts to the award ceremony: "Roy richly
deserves this high honor for all of his hard work on behalf on the CLC
and the SoCal Region in particular. Roy is a rare
treasure". Southern California Region couldn't agree more.
