With generous help from a host region the National
CLC holds their annual Grand National meet in a different city each
year.
The Grand National is not just a car show - It is
the gathering of a community comprised of people of all walks of
life that have one thing in common – A passion for Cadillac and
LaSalle automobiles.
I was first drawn to the CLC and its shows for
the cars, but now I go mostly for the people. Don’t get me wrong, I
still love the cars, but the people are really what make the event
meaningful.
The People—Georgia is no doubt part of the South,
and Southern Hospitality is alive and well there. Most folks at the
GN were from Georgia, Florida, the Carolinas, and other mid-Atlantic
states.
These folks were universally nice and always in good
humor. The turnout was excellent with almost 800 attendees. Michael Posey was our host, while Jack McClow
directed the event. We were few and far between, but
Californians came and made our presence known. Fred Bausch & Carl
Stieg were there in their official capacities, Western Regions VP & Chief Judge, respectively. Tom
Young made the drive from Paso Robles in a modern Cadillac. Dave & Patti Ricci flew in from the Bay Area, and I
flew in from Los Angeles. Other Californians on the attendee list
who I did not get a chance to talk to while there included:
Joe Benz, Carolyn Dippel, Elmer Giltner, Hillard
Gordon, Harry Hadley, Roland Moore, and Chuck Storni. Harry & Donna
Hadley drove their 41,000 original mile 1967 Coupe deVille from San
Jose via Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
